Graphical abstract: Even the normal is abnormal: N-heterocyclic carbene C2 binding to a phosphaalkene without breaking the P [[double bond, length as m-dash]] C π-bondChemistry sometimes throws curve balls. A strong donor like an NHC involved in the formation of a weak adduct with a phosphaalkene. What?!? It had to end. Weiying, our excellent Globalink undergraduate student left Vancouver to return home to complete his undergraduate degree. Weiying worked in the lab for three months, working on probing the electronic structure of a series of pi-complexes of both nickel and copper.

Melanie Backer has joined the group to pursue her undergraduate senior thesis. She will be working on studying the interactions between halogenated dyes and peptides and proteins, with the thought that halogen bonding can disrupt hydrogen bonding and thus prevent peptide aggregation processes.
